The first Briton in space, Helen Sharman, and the first female British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, both studied chemistry at University.

Chemistry is essential for meeting our basic needs of food, clothing, shelter, fuel, medicine, building and construction, environment and many more. Chemistry teaches us about the behaviour of atoms, molecules, and ions determines the sort of world we live in, our shapes and sizes, and even how we feel on a given day.

What do we study?

At Sacred Heart,  A Level content is challenging and exciting. 

We cover the following areas: atomic structure and the Periodic Table, bonding and structure, redox chemistry, inorganic chemistry, energetics, equilibrium, acid-base chemistry, transition metals, organic chemistry, kinetics and modern analytical techniques.

The students’ practical work is also monitored and endorsed by the awarding body.

Beyond the Classroom

Each year our chemists attend ‘Chemistry in action’ lectures and take part in the Royal Society of Chemistry International Chemistry Olympiad and have won numerous gold, silver and bronze awards.

Students  undertake numerous independent research projects and online courses suggested by their teachers using Seneca or Futurelearn platform to develop their career, learn a new skill, or pursue their hobbies.

Where it Might Lead

There is no doubt that Chemistry A Level is highly respected, with its broad variety of tested skills. A Level Chemistry is highly regarded by employers. In addition,  Chemistry is an excellent choice for many degrees and careers, eg. pure science, medicine, dentistry, veterinary science and engineering.
