What We Study, Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE Further Mathematics

Further Mathematics A-Level is an exciting and challenging course designed for students who enjoy problem solving, logical thinking, and exploring mathematical ideas in greater depth. It extends and enriches the content of A-Level Mathematics, offering a broader and more advanced understanding of the subject. It is ideal for students considering university courses or careers in fields such as Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or Economics. 

The course builds on topics from A-Level Maths but moves quickly into new territory. In Further Pure Mathematics, students study complex numbers, matrices, proof, and advanced calculus — topics that reveal the deeper structure of mathematics and its elegant connections. Alongside this, students at our Sixth Form choose optional modules in Further Mechanics and Decision Mathematics.  Further Mechanics develops ideas of motion, momentum, and energy, linking beautifully with Physics and Engineering. Decision Mathematics explores algorithms, networks, and optimisation — the mathematics behind logistics, computing, and artificial intelligence. 

Teaching combines clear, focused explanations with discussion-based learning, problem-solving workshops, and independent investigation. Technology, such as graphing software and online tools, supports understanding and allows students to explore concepts visually. Regular feedback and small-group support ensure that every student can progress confidently, even if they are new to studying advanced mathematics. 

What makes Further Mathematics at our Sixth Form unique is the sense of curiosity and collaboration it inspires. Students work closely with teachers and peers, often tackling challenging problems together and exploring ideas beyond the syllabus. We encourage creative thinking and a real appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematical reasoning. By the end of the course, students not only master complex techniques but also gain the intellectual resilience and flexibility that universities and employers value highly. 

Beyond the Classroom

Studying Further Mathematics at our Sixth Form goes far beyond the classroom. We offer a wide range of enrichment opportunities designed to challenge, inspire, and connect students with the wider mathematical community. 

Each year, our students take part in the UKMT Senior Mathematics Challenge, a national competition that encourages creative and independent problem solving. Many of our students achieve excellent results and some even progress to the follow-on rounds. 

We also enjoy strong links with nearby St Paul’s Girls School, which has supported students in their study for entrance exams to top universities in Maths. 

In addition, we attend Maths Inspiration events, where students hear from leading mathematicians, scientists, and engineers about how mathematics is used in the real world. These events showcase the creativity, relevance, and excitement of Maths beyond the A Level syllabus. 

Where it Might Lead

An A-Level in Further Mathematics is one of the most powerful qualifications a student can have. It is highly valued by universities and employers for demonstrating advanced problem-solving ability, logical thinking, and resilience. 

Students who study Further Maths often go on to university degrees in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, or Economics, where the topics they’ve explored — such as complex numbers, matrices, and algorithms — provide a real advantage. It is also excellent preparation for degree apprenticeships in fields like data analysis, software engineering, finance, and cyber security, where mathematical reasoning and coding skills are highly prized. 

Further Mathematics opens the door to a huge range of careers. Graduates can be found working as engineers, data scientists, quantitative analysts, actuaries, statisticians, researchers, and even in less traditional areas such as artificial intelligence, climate modelling, and operations management. Beyond specific roles, the subject equips students with the ability to analyse complex problems, communicate ideas clearly, and make logical decisions — skills valued in every industry.
