Art allows us to observe, creatively interpret and begin to understand the world as we find it; a world which can appear challenging, unjust or disturbing in one moment, but poetic, moving or beautiful in the next. 

What do we Study

The subject provides opportunities to become visually and aesthetically literate.  It allows you to be expressive in an imaginative and creative way, encouraging independence and building your self-confidence. You will be able to perceive, react, talk, analyse, judge and value Art. You will have an opportunity to explore a variety of mediums from paintings, photography to sculpture. In order to succeed at this level, students need a very high standard of skill in a variety of mediums and disciplines as well as an ability to analyse and research. There is a strong emphasis on realistic drawing in the new specs.

In Year 12, you have the opportunity to explore and build your confidence in a variety of mediums and techniques at a very high level. The first two terms explore working with drawing, painting, photography, video and sculpture. Independence is paramount and you will be given a theme to develop through exciting investigations and critical understanding. Personal study begins in term 3 (Unit 1 of Year 13). This involves an analytical essay of no less than 1,000 words alongside art work which is related to the art based topic chosen for the essay. This work is completely independently based upon the area of study chosen.

Beyond the Classroom

Students will regularly visit galleries in London, which enhances knowledge of artworks and helps to develop creativity and styles. A trip abroad is also available alternate years.

Partnerships with the Saatchi Gallery, Tate Britain / Modern, National Portrait Gallery and V&A will encourage students to attend lectures by practising artists and art historians.

Weekend workshops and portfolio preparation courses at the Camden Arts centre. Become a member of the Youth Collective and work with other young people to create interesting and independent artwork. Summer and Easter workshops will be available at either The Tate Gallery, The Saatchi Gallery or National Portrait Gallery.

Where it might lead

Choose a foundation year at art schools such Central Saint Martins, City and Guilds or Camberwell. Maybe consider a specialised art or design degree, or return to an unrelated university subject. There are numerous design careers beyond fine art, from theatre to fashion to product design to architecture, whilst the creativity and imagination necessary for art A Level will prove advantageous in careers such as advertising and marketing. Students select art as a creative counterpoint to their other A Levels and go on to every imaginable type of degree.
